Licensing
« on: July 08, 2010, 07:46:17 pm »
I've noted this in several posts, so I thought it may be useful to sticky it for others.

People have asked why I started charging with v3.0, the main reasons are to recoup some of the many thousands of dollars I've spent on resources, time, hardware and bandwidth over the last ten years.
If I can actually make some money on this project, my first priority is to hire someone smarter than me to make it even better :)

That said, I'm happy to provide people with a free, full license, providing they can contribute back to this project in a meaningful way.

There's always a need for:

Testers
End user testing is important - I need someone who can draw up test plans and execute them with each release.
This includes testing on multiple operating systems, multiple browsers, etc.

Coders for bug fixes
PHP, Javascript, JQuery, PERL and MySQL (events and partitioning)

Coders for enhancements
PHP, Javascript, JQuery, PERL and MySQL (events and partitioning)
Enhancements wanted:
  • Better debug logging for db_insert.pl (using Log4Perl)
     - The current debug logging slows down processing a LOT when using full debug.
     - During tests, I was able to process 20kmps, but with full debug on, the number dropped to 120mps.
  • The LogZilla Error Classification System
     - This is a new venture. I want to build a companion website where people can put explanations, recommended actions, etc. for matched messages.
     - After a pattern is submitted to the website, users will be able to download packages for technologies (such as Cisco, Apache, Firewall, etc) and import the package into LogZilla.
     - If LZ knows about the message, it will display a full help system along with recommended actions.
     - There's a LOT of work to be done on this project, but I've already coded some of it into LZ (it's just commented out for now).
     - If you are interested in helping, please let me know!

Documentation
I need people with good grammar skills to maintain documentation on the Wiki site for the
I also need someone to maintain the internal help system stored in the database. This is the text that gets displayed when a user selects the context-sensitive help icons (the ?'s).

Usage Videos
I'd like to create some demo videos for both installation and general usage examples.
I prefer to create videos using Camtasia, but would be happy if anyone made anything that looks good.

Forums and Email
People who can help answer questions both in the forums and the Google email list.

MySQL experts
I need people who are masters of MySQL - especially at event triggers and partitioning.

Sphinx
Sphinx is an essential part of LogZilla, it's what allows for the extreme speed we want when searching through data. I need someone who is willing to read the Sphinx documentation and find better ways to do what we're doing (if there is).
I think the way I have it set up now is very good, but I may be missing something and could use some second (or third) opinions.

Advertise!
Tell everyone about LogZilla, let the world know there is a great tool out there that can help with their log analysis.
Please don't "spam" forums/blogs/websites/emails, etc., but please do let people know about LZ :)

Hope this helps :)

Is any contributed source code going to be licensed with an open license?

If you want to contribute code, I will ask that you sign a waiver of copyright. This is the advice I was given by my Lawyer in case a company ever wants to purchase the rights to LogZilla.

Well not to sound too stingy with money or time, I would be very interested in a free licence in return for testing and/or documentation.  I have a mix of platforms here including Solaris and RHEL as the two main ones.

I do tend to build my apache and php from source though, rather than rely on packages, so my documentation might be slightly different.

I'm already recommending it to people in different departments at the University I work at, since php-syslogng version 2.9.

I don't consider this "stingy" at all, in fact, this is the exact reason why I offer free licenses - I need help with all the work :)

If you still are looking for testers I'd be willing to test for you as well.

Do you have experience in testing? (Writing test plans, vmware for multiple OS tests, etc)?
If so, please contact me at cdukes at cdukes.com and we can discuss it :)

I to work at a educational institution and would be interested in a free license in return for whatever you need most.

Currently I am running Logzilla on an HP Proliant DL 385G2 (2 dual core AMD opteron processors, 16 Gb DDR2 RAM, 8 72 Gb 10 K SAS drives) running Ubuntu 10.04.  We have a two SonicWall E7500's that I am sysloging the logs to this server and this bad boy is logging 850 to 950  messages a second at peak.

Here is what I am able to do for Logzilla:

Tester:

I can test Logzilla on physical and virtual servers using a variety of Operating systems and I am experienced writing test plans (I use a test template).

Coders:

I can help with the PHP code but I not a programmer.  I had to learn PHP so that the Instructors had a scripting language to use to send mail and write to a databases and we do not have any programmers here.  They had been using FrontPage (Well some are still using FrontPage).  I am currently attempting to teach myself OOP PHP.  I do run several MySQL databases on both Windows 2008 servers and Ubuntu linux servers in VMware vSphere environment.

Documentation:

I write a lot of how to's (I call them procedures now) since I own a lot of the responsibility for our infrastructure.  I have added one on creating a website on a Windows 2008 Server with IIS 7.

Usage Videos:

I am going to create a installation video for the current version using Camtasia, although you have one on Youtube.  I figured it would be a good place to start.

Hi Legatus,
I received your email and will respond asap. Sorry for the delay, I have been on holiday with no internet access (other than my mobile) :)
I'm very happy that you want to contribute and will respond to your email to get you started.

Thanks!

P.S. Should that be "I too"? hehe ;)

I am using phpsyslog-ng for a very long time.
Logzilla locks promising!

I would like to get a free, unlimited, licence of LogZilla.

and using LogZilla with many, many devices...   :)

Hi cdukes!

I'm from Brazil. I work in a small Quality Consulting Company as PHP programmer; modeling MySQL database; installation, configuration and maintenance of Linux Server (specifically Ubuntu Server and Debian); I have experience in installation and configuration of Linux Server applications (Apache, MySQL, PHP, Cron, Syslog, libraries packages and dependences, etc) and have an extensive knowledge of SSH terminal. I am a Development Analyst System looking for better solutions to my company.

I liked a lot the LogZilla solution for a Log Centralization GUI, combined with the powerful Syslog-NG. I installed it in my company with the Free Small Business License and that is already more than enough for the current needs of my company.

However, I would like to get a free and unlimited license only by reason to use the Ad-hoc Charts Graphs. Just for that. My company has no more than 50 hosts and no more than 1 million messages per day (actually we have just about 60.000 messages per day). The Small Business License is perfect to my company, but, I really need to use the Ad-hoc Charts Graph reports, and for my company is not feasible to spend $4,999.00 in a "Pro" licence just to have the Ad-hoc Charts Graph feature.

So I would like to offer my expertise to help the development of this great and promising software and want to get the free unlimited license just to use the Ad-hoc Charts reports.

I can make an Brazillian Portuguese translation of LogZilla, too.

Thank you for your attention!

(Ps.: Sorry if has some english errors in my text) :)
